Colby Griffith, a student in the Automotive Technology program at the Seaway Career & Technical Education Center, is the February recipient of the Potsdam Rotary Club’s “Rev. William R. and Crystal E. Cuthbert Vocational Excellence Award Sponsored by Brookfield Renewable U.S.” Griffith is the child of Michael and Brandi Griffith.
At a Rotary luncheon honoring Griffith, he met with Potsdam Rotarians and was commended for his academic excellence by Seaway Tech instructor David Denny.
“Colby is a joy to have in class,” said Denny. “He is respectful to staff and his peers. His love of auto technology shines through in the classroom and the shop daily. He loves the hands-on portion of the program and excels in this area. He can do anything that I ask him with little assistance. Colby will make a great employee in the automotive field.”
Students in the two-year Automotive Technology program gain hands-on experience working in an industry-standard lab setting, learning the essential skills needed to begin a career in the automotive industry. Students learn the fundamentals of vehicle repairs, introduction to engines, brake fundamentals, suspension and steering, drive trains and axles, NYS inspection, automotive electrical, engine performance, fuel and emissions, cost estimation, and customer service skills. Students can earn up to six different certifications and college credit opportunities are offered.
In the spring, Griffith will participate in a work-based learning experience shadowing and learning firsthand the ins and outs of a local automotive facility. Upon completion of the program, he will seek employment in the automotive industry using his skills in all areas that encompass his two-year training.
