Tyler Solon of Potsdam Central School District, a student in the Metalworking Technology program at the Seaway Career & Technical Education Center, is the December recipient of the Potsdam Rotary Club’s “Rev. William R. and Crystal E. Cuthbert Vocational Excellence Award Sponsored by Brookfield Renewable U.S.” Solon is the child of Michael and Amanda Solon.
At a Rotary luncheon honoring Solon, he met with Potsdam Rotarians and was commended for his academic excellence by Seaway Tech instructor Shastin Crobar.
“Tyler is a well-rounded individual,” said Crobar. “He is ambitious, respectful and outgoing. He is always willing to tackle any task he is given and learn new things. Tyler has great leadership qualities but is also able to be part of any group. His future goals are to further his education and skills in the trade to eventually work in the windmill industry.”
As a student in the Metalworking program, Solon has become familiar with the working properties of steel, stainless steel and aluminum. Students learn to read blueprints, interpret AWS welding symbols and identify the necessary equipment and procedures for various welding processes focusing on safety and operation. An extensive amount of skill repetition is done to build consistency in foundational and advanced welding techniques. Students have the opportunity to test for the NYS Department of Transportation Structural Weld Certification Test and the OSHA 10 Hour General Construction Certification. Students also participate in a work-based learning experience. College credits are available.
