Mya Sevey of Colton-Pierrepont Central School District, a student in the HVAC/R program at the Seaway Career & Technical Education Center, is the September recipient of the Potsdam Rotary Club’s “Rev. William R. and Crystal E. Cuthbert Vocational Excellence Award Sponsored by Brookfield Renewable U.S.” Sevey is the child of Michael and Melinda Sevey.
At a Rotary luncheon honoring Sevey, she met with Potsdam Rotarians and was commended for her academic excellence by Seaway Tech instructor Bryan Mott.
“Mya is an outstanding student,” said Mott. “She pays attention in class and can take what she has learned to the shop and do the work with ease. She also is a member of the National Technical Honor Society.”
Students in the HVAC/R program learn how to install and maintain industrial and residential systems. Topics include basic electric theory, wiring, troubleshooting skills, use of an electrical meter along with common electrical and mechanical hand tools, fundamental principles of refrigeration, combustion, thermodynamics and trade safety. Students have an opportunity to earn Federal Environmental Protection Agency Section 608 of the Clean Air Act Certification needed to handle refrigerants. There are also dual enrollment opportunities for students to earn college credit.
Upon completion of the program, students can perform tasks such as soldering, brazing, flaring copper tubing, wiring switches, relays, contactors, and lights. They can also become OSHA certified if they have met all the requirements.
